Most of us, when flipping through fashion magazines, come across images that are either amazingly beautiful or catch our attention for some other reason. While many people know the famous faces in the pictures, far fewer know about the people behind the camera, but if you’re interested in celebrity and fashion photography, there are a few names that you really should know.
Helmut Newton
His portraits of celebrities span decades, and he’s known as one of the greatest photographers of all time. His work has appeared in magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Playboy, and it’s known for its stylised look and the erotic subtexts that the pictures often have. Many photographers list Newton as someone who inspired them to enter the world of fashion photography.
Annie Leibovitz

Having spent much of her career as a photographer for Vanity Fair, Annie Leibovitz is one of the photographers whose work is easily recognisable, and she’s even more of a household name thanks to the movie about her life and work, ‘Annie Leibovitz – Life Through A Lens’. Another reason why she’s so well-known is that a number of her pictures have caused controversy in the past: a portrait of a pregnant, naked Demi Moore is one example, while a photograph of teenager Miley Cyrus apparently covered only with a sheet is a more recent example.
David LaChapelle
David LaChapelle’s photographs tend to have a surreal look to them, and it might be this that makes his work so distinctive. He’s also a renowned videographer, and is responsible for videos for songs as diverse as Blink 182’s ‘Feeling This’, Amy Winehouse’s ‘Tears Dry on Their Own’, and ‘Rich Girl’ by Gwen Stefani and Eve.
Of course, everyone has their own list of photography greats. Take a look at some more and choose your own favourites.
